Good morning & Happy New Year!

Wildwood’s Children’s Ministry is FOR children following Jesus together to the glory of God. We love partnering with you as we continually point children to Christ.  This Sunday begins a new unit that we use to help guide our teaching on Sunday mornings. Over the next several weeks, kids will learn that God’s promises for Abraham & Isaac were promises for Jacob too. God showed Jacob in a dream that He would bless Jacob’s family, which would grow to be a whole nation as part of His plan to bring Jesus, the Savior of the world.

You may have noticed that we are continuing our study of Genesis. Over the course of three years, we walk the kids through the Bible from Genesis to Revelation. While we will spend the majority of our time this year in the Old Testament, each lesson that we teach your kids includes a “Christ Connection.”  Our goal is to help your kids see the bigger story – that the Bible is not a collection of stories, but God’s unified story of redemption.  Please review the Christ Connection for each lesson below. Each unit also includes a “Big Picture Question & Answer” which is designed to help children understand essential theological doctrines of the Christian faith.

Attached to this post are two documents that you are welcome to use as you lead your children at home in their faith journeys. The first document outlines the teaching for the next three weeks. The second document includes a list of the foundational theological truths that are woven throughout our lessons. Please feel free to visit our Parent Resource Center to pick up additional resources that correspond with our teaching on Sundays.

Here is a brief overview of the teaching for the next three Sundays:

January 6th– Jacob & Esau (Genesis 27-28)

Christ Connection: The promises for Abraham & Isaac also became the promises for Jacob. At Bethel, God showed that His plan was to continue the covenant through Jacob’s family and eventually a whole nation, leading to the birth of Jesus—the promised Savior.

January 13th – Jacob & Rachel (Genesis 29-31)

Christ Connection:  Nothing could stop God’s plan for the family of Abraham, Isaac & Jacob. Even though Jacob did not love Leah, God loved her & used her in His plan. Through the family of Jacob & Leah’s son Judah, God would show His love for the world by sending His Son to be the Savior He promised.

January 21st – Jacob’s New Name (Genesis 32-33)

Christ Connection: God changed Jacob’s life and gave him a new name, Israel. Jesus came so that we might have a changed life, forgiven of sin. (2 Corinthians 5:17) Jesus’ death and resurrection provided sinful people the way to be adopted into God’s family. When we are adopted into the family of God we also receive a new name –children of God (John 1:12).

We are also excited to let you know that we will be introducing your children to new missionaries throughout this year. On Sunday, your kids will be introduced to Caleb who is a missionary from Canada. Caleb ministers to South Asians. We will learn about the culture & landscape of South Asia. We will also spend time writing letters to Josafa & Hetiele who are partnering with Wildwood through Compassion International to plant a church in Northern Brazil (Lake San Francisco).

We look forward to seeing your family this Sunday!
